Pros of living in Canada

Canadian Actors who made it big

Friday, June 4th, 2010

So I started to wonder over time how many Canadian actors made it big compared to how many American actors make it big. I don’t mean as movie stars per say, but actors who really have talent or you recognize their face.

If you think about it, the US obviously has hundreds of thousands of actors vying to make it big while Canada has only a small percentage of that, so if there are a lot of Canadian actors who have made it big, to me this logically means that the pool of Canadian talent outweighs the US talent.

So I started compiling a list of Canadian talent not just as actors, but directors, etc.

Then I came across this list of actors who are either from the UK, Ireland or Australia & was shocked as to how many talented actors there are that we think are American, but really aren’t.

While this has nothing to do with Canada, the point I’m trying to make is that yes, there are many Americans actors who are talented, but as far as I see, most of the real talent comes from outside the States.

Here is the short list I’ve come up with & I’ll add more as I come across more Canadian actors:

James Cameron – Director (Terminator(s), Aliens, Titanic, & Avatar)
David Shore – Writer/Producer (House)
Victor Garber
Michael J. Fox
Keanu Reeves
Jim Carey
Martin Short
Kiefer Sutherland
Catherine Anne O’Hara
Ellen Page
Peter Jackson
Emily van Camp
Shawn Ashmore
Aaron Ashmore

– Americans vs. Canadians –

Canada cares more about the environment then Americans do

Monday, February 16th, 2009

So it just came to my attention that despite all the hard work Al Gore has done for environment, Americans are still just plain ignorant when it comes to the environment.

Out of 20 items on their lists of concerns, Global Warming ranked last.

While I get that everyone cares about the economy, the fact that they don’t care at all about the environment shocks me. The manufacturing plants in the US pollute the air & water & kill humans, animals, fish, etc. & yet it looks like Americans don’t care. Not only that, but the border towns between the States & Canada like Windsor & Sarnia suffer THE MOST because the wind blows all the pollution into Canada.

These plants also produce chemicals that seep into our bodies by way of plastic water bottles, containers we keep our food in, baby bottles that feed our babies, etc.

You build a house, and the drywall & paint seep into our skin & we breath it in because it is deadly toxic.

I know that people within California seem to care, but I’m wondering if the reason Americans don’t care, is because they just aren’t smart enough to understand the ramifications of what is going on here.

They complain about the weather costing billions of dollars & killing thousands of people, but they can’t add 2 + 2 & come up with 4.

More & more people are becoming sick & live a poor quality of life, yet people (not just Americans) seem to be clueless that a lot of this is because of all the pollution in both the water & the air.

The male species (yes humans) is becoming extinct & for over 20 years now, women have been having difficulties conceiving, or carrying babies to full term & I know this has to do with all the pollutions in the air & the water, yet Americans don’t seem to care.

So when it comes to health, clean water, air & land, Canadians by far are way above the Americans. I’m not saying the Canadian government is all great, because they have done nothing to address the overall environmental issue since they signed with the Kyoto Protocol. We all know Canada is always a weak country, & they wait to see what the US is doing before they act, so it’s no surprise they did nothing the entire time Bush was in power, but it seems at least that the Canadian people care more about the environment then American people do.

See how much they care by this site

Germans outrank everyone when it comes to cleaning up their country.

Ice Wine & Culture

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Well one thing is for sure, I don’t think the US has ice wine there, let alone Americans even knows what it is.

I absolutely love this wine, & Ontario (Niagara Region) produces quite a bit of it, Inniskillin being the best as far as I’m concerned, as I’ve tried the cheap stuff, & it just doesn’t cut it. Niagara on the Lake even has an ice wine festival every year, if you can believe that. I aim to make it there one of these years.

When I’ve talked to Americans about it, they don’t even know what I’m talking about & yes, that does partially have to do with Americans generally NOT being as cultured as Canadians.

Not that ALL Canadians are cultured, but a lot are being that they travel more outside their own country, & they just tend to have better taste than Americans do.

I’ve talked to soooo many Americans who have never stepped foot outside their own city let alone their own State or country.

As for taste buds, I remember when I went to Chicago several years back, & every restaurant the guy took me to was terrible. Compare that to Toronto’s over 7,000 different restaurants, & there’s no comparison.

To be clear, I’m not saying every restaurant in Toronto is great, many aren’t, it’s just I’m used to finding good food, especially in the mom & pop type restaurants, in Toronto.

I talked to a friend of mine about it, & he grew up in the States just like myself & said that there’s no comparison between the restaurants in Toronto & the ones in the States.

I’m not saying all of Canada has great restaurants, I live near Windsor now, & so far out of about 12 restaurants, only ONE restaurant in Windsor has enticed me to come back, & I found out they are originally from Toronto, so as far as I’m concerned, they don’t count LOL

The rest of the restaurants are terrible, & their food is even more expensive then in Toronto (excluding high end restaurants of course).

So there’s a little bit of info for you, on ice wine & culture in both the US & Canada.

Taxes on Lottery Winnings & Gambling Winnings

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Here’s one for Canada, although I heard that the laws may change for online gambling soon.

In Canada, when you win money from a lottery, you don’t have to pay taxes.

Same thing is true when you win money from gambling, you don’t have to pay taxes. While in the States, you do have to pay taxes when you win money from a lottery or from gambling.

Does this mean that if an American crosses the border & gambles at a Casino in the Caribbean, on a cruise ship or in Canada they don’t have to pay taxes?

That I don’t know, but I’m sure someone who is an expert in American tax law will let me know sooner or later :  )

Beautiful Cities in Canada

Monday, September 1st, 2008

Well I do have one pro that we can give Canada, they have nicer cities.

Granted I haven’t been to every city in Canada & to every city in the US, but as I always say, if I fell asleep in a car & you drove across the border, & I woke up, I’d know right away that I was in the States because most of their cities are ugly.

They don’t take care of their streets, roads, etc., their traffic lights hang by these ugly black wires, & there’s hardly any greenery around, so I’m guessing they have very few parks, while Canada for the most part builds a lot of pretty parks.

By & large Canada has beauty all around it (except in winter of course LOL), but I know that Canada has some ugly cities too, I just think they have fewer ugly cities than the States has.

You can correct me either way if I’m wrong.
